And then they said…..

Occasionally in lieu of actually spending time with my works in progress I like to read what other authors have to say about the art of writing.  Below are some quotes that tickled my fancy….

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” – Ernest Hemingway

“An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all.” -Oscar Wilde

“If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do and in my art or music, then in that respect you can call me that… I believe in what I do, and I’ll say it.” John Lennon

“Writers are not just people who sit down and write.  They hazard themselves.  Every time you compose a book your composition of yourself is at stake.”  -E.L. Doctorow

“Loafing is the most productive part of a writer’s life.” -James Norman Hall

“Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness.  One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.”  ~George Orwell, “Why I Write,” 1947

“No matter what she says, your nine year old is not an editor.” – Laura Elaro (moi)

  1. I’ve always loved and agreed with Ernest Hemingway’s quote. Sometimes it feels like I’ve lost a few pints after an especially long day writing.

And that Elaro woman sure is wise. I’ll have to keep my eye on her work. 😉

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Thanks Mike! I could do a whole page of just Hemingway – hysterical and right on point stuff. Sometimes going for a few pints sounds better than sitting down to write. LOL!
